About Wheeldestrian.

Wheeldestrian™ is a patented traffic signal technology developed by Mobility Unlimited Technology Worldwide (MUTW) to make street crossings safer and more accessible for wheelchair users.

Conceived by inventor Helen M. Dowdell after a wheelchair user was killed in a crosswalk, Wheeldestrian is a system that integrates an additional wheelchair-specific signal and button into existing traffic infrastructure, allowing wheelchair users more time and visibility to cross safely. The technology incorporates an international symbol of accessibility to alert motorists to wheelchair users in crossing areas, with universal design benefits for pedestrians who are visually impaired, parents with strollers, and people of smaller stature.

Wheeldestrian has been piloted in partnership with organizations including Atlanta’s Shepherd Center, a leader in spinal cord and brain injury rehabilitation.

Past & Future.

2019.
Genesis of Innovation
In 2019, Helen M. Dowdell (Dr. Helen Brown) was working in the legal field when she learned about a young wheelchair user who was killed in a crosswalk in Georgia. This tragedy deeply affected her and sparked her determination to create a solution. Recognizing that the South has a high concentration of persons with disabilities and that people with limited mobility make up the largest minority group globally (with disabilities affecting approximately four out of six people), she began sketching designs for what would become the Wheelchair Traffic Signal System. This marked the beginning of her transition from legal work into the STEM field and disability advocacy.
2020-2022.
Development and Patent Protection
Over the next three and a half years following her initial sketch, Dowdell and her team developed a real-world device ready for integration into existing traffic systems. The design process involved extensive research into existing traffic infrastructure and formulating solutions that could be easily translated and scaled to market without the typical 10-12 year wait for new traffic technology implementation. During this period, she applied for and secured patents for the technology, which became known as Wheeldestrian™. When her team discovered there were as few as 20 ADA accommodations in their Georgia city and determined the municipality lacked bandwidth for such an undertaking, they used their own resources to develop the solution. The company, Mobility Unlimited Technology Worldwide (MUTW), was formally established with Dowdell as CEO, and she collaborated directly with persons with disabilities to ensure the technology was designed "with them, not just for them."
2023-2025.
Recognition and Partnership
By 2023, Wheeldestrian™ had gained significant recognition as the first and only wheelchair traffic signal system. The technology, described as a "plug-and-play" solution that integrates into existing traffic signals, flashes the international symbol for accessibility toward motorists. MUTW secured a major partnership with Shepherd Center, a world-renowned neurorehabilitation hospital and trailblazer in disability advocacy based in Atlanta. This partnership aligned with both organizations' missions to promote full inclusion and safety for people with disabilities. Atlanta, with its commitment to equity, was identified as the ideal city for Wheeldestrian™ integration and would serve as a launching point for global implementation. Dr. Brown emphasized that intellectual property protections were paramount to the company's mission, providing validation, competitive advantage, and the ability to accelerate innovation while safeguarding the technology from imitation.
2026.
Current Status and Expansion
As of 2026, MUTW continues to advocate for and implement Wheeldestrian™ technology, addressing the critical need for safer pedestrian infrastructure for the estimated 5.5 million wheelchair users in the U.S. alone (a number growing by approximately 1 million annually). The company has established itself as a leader in accessibility technology, with Dr. Brown serving as an advocate and speaker, particularly encouraging women and students to pursue STEM fields. The company is focused on overcoming ongoing challenges including securing resources and funding, combating IP infringement, addressing inadequate enforcement of IP rights, and navigating disparities in IP protections across jurisdictions. MUTW's mission extends beyond U.S. borders, aiming to create universal and inclusive technology globally for the 65 million wheelchair users and one billion people with disabilities worldwide.
2028.
Projected National Rollout
Based on current trajectory and partnerships, MUTW is positioned to expand Wheeldestrian™ implementation beyond Atlanta to other major metropolitan areas across the United States. With growing awareness of the 36% higher mortality risk for wheelchair pedestrians compared to non-wheelchair pedestrians, and the economic incentive of the $17.3 billion in annual revenue businesses lose by not making spaces accessible, municipalities are expected to increasingly adopt the technology. The company anticipates broader collaboration with policymakers and stakeholders to advocate for policies that support innovation and accessibility, potentially leading to state-level initiatives for standardizing wheelchair-accessible traffic signal infrastructure.
2030.
Projected International Expansion
MUTW aims to achieve significant international market penetration, introducing Wheeldestrian™ technology to countries worldwide as part of their global mission to serve one billion people with disabilities. Building on established IP protections and successful U.S. implementation, the company expects to navigate varying international regulations and standards for traffic infrastructure. This phase would involve strategic partnerships with international disability advocacy organizations, government transportation agencies, and urban planning initiatives in walkable/rollable communities globally. The technology's universal design approach—benefiting not only wheelchair users but also visually impaired pedestrians, people using strollers, and individuals of smaller stature—positions it as a comprehensive solution for creating more inclusive and safer public spaces worldwide.
